Trump National Doral was awesome this week and the tournament was great for TV. I expect that the ratings were “Yuge.” The Donald was in attendance.

I was disappointed in Rory McIlroy failing to win this weekend. He was in complete control and needed to shoot a reasonable score today to win. He’d dominated the par 5’s and couldn’t do much of anything on Sunday. McIlroy has an extra gear and he’s been unable to tap into that consistently this year. I thought his strategy was too conservative and he didn’t give himself many opportunities to make birdies. The switch to a new putting grip is probably still a good move and he had two rounds of fantastic putting. He still turned in a really good tournament and was much better than Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. Finally, props to Steven Bowditch for shooting in the 80’s for four rounds this week and earning $48,000.

Adam Scott Goes Back to Back

Adam Scott wins consecutive tournaments and he made a cool $1.62 million for his efforts this weekend. I am impressed with how Scott has putted so far and he was cool under pressure on the green. He had several poor shots (two double-bogeys today) and he’s got such a steady demeanor. Scott’s combination of power and accuracy will ensure that he’s got plenty of scoring opportunities. He’s the best player in the world right now regardless of what the OWGR says on Monday.

The good news is that there wasn’t a cut and I had several players play exceptionally well. Bubba Watson finished 2nd and I thought he might even get into a playoff after Scott’s errant approach on the 18th hole. Watson has plenty of power and a course like this is ideal for him. He wasn’t as good on the green as he needed to be and should have won by several shots. Watson has finished 2nd at the WGC-Cadillac twice before and he went on to win the Masters each time. Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen finished T-14th. Johnson was in the final pairing and struggled mightily to finish the tournament. Johnson shot a 79 after displaying poise for much of the week. Oosty didn’t start strong and was quietly competitive this week.

Grame McDowell finished T-28th and had a hard time during the opening and closing rounds. He doesn’t hit the ball very far and the swirling winds made a big difference in his scores. I thought he still played okay and didn’t expect him to win at any point prior to the event. Billy Horschel finished 41st and looked great after the opening rounds. Horschel’s 1-under par going into Saturday and I’m feeling good. He closed with two 75’s and those good vibes went away. Last, (easily least) is J.B. Holmes. Holmes played so well here last year and he’s got plenty of power. He finished 59th and shot an 80 in the final round. Way to finish strong!
